The Originality Fingerprint in Packback Writing Assignments (Deep Dives and Originality Reviews) is currently available for educators to view after a student submits their assignment.
It provides the following two indicators:
- Uniqueness - for more details check out this article
- AI Risk - for more details check out this article
The Uniqueness indicator represents the percentage of the student’s content that is not matched to other sources. Packback checks against external sources (found anywhere on the web) and internal sources (content from previously submitted Packback assignments).
- A lower Originality score means that a larger portion of the student’s content was matched to other sources, and could be a sign of plagiarism.
- Note: Packback’s scan does not currently exclude quoted content or in-text citations. If your student receives a low score, be sure to review the Originality Report to see more details about the matches sources.
- A higher Originality score means that a smaller portion of the student’s content was matched to other sources.
- Note: Packback’s scan does not currently include paywalled journal article sources. (But this is coming soon!)
The AI Risk indicator represents the likeliness that the student’s content was written by generative AI. Packback’s algorithm examines word choice and sequence in the student’s text to produce this risk report. Humans tend to write with more ‘surprising’ words than AI, which follows a statistical pattern when generating text.
- Low means that Packback’s algorithm did not detect any obvious AI-generated text. It is still possible that a student used AI, but it is less likely.
- Moderate means that Packback’s algorithm detected text that could have been generated by AI. Educators should take a closer look at the student’s content, and, if AI-generated text is suspected, have a conversation with the student about how they developed their work.
- Note: It is possible for human writing to be unintentionally flagged as Moderate.
- High means that Packback’s algorithm detected a significant amount of text that was likely generated by AI.
The two indicators (Uniqueness and AI Risk) are determined independently. This means that a student can have a high Uniqueness indicator (few matches detected) and a moderate or high AI Risk indicator (higher chance of AI-generated text) or vice versa. AI-generated text is not published, so it would not appear in a scan of existing sources.
