Packback uses a cool feature called the Uniqueness indicator to check your text for matches to other sources. It is built into our Packback’s writing assignments (Deep Dive and Originality Review) to help you learn and grow as a writer!
The Uniqueness indicator is a percentage that shows how much of your work is unique compared to other sources on the internet and other Packback submissions. A higher percentage usually means your work is more original.
Depending on the settings for your assignment, you may be able to view this indicator within the Originality Fingerprint prior to submitting your assignment.
What does the Uniqueness percentage mean?
Think of your Uniqueness indicator as a clue, not a final grade.
- Lower Score: If your score is a bit lower, it just means some parts of your writing are similar to other sources. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's a good reminder to double-check your work and make sure you're expressing your own ideas in your own words.
- Higher Score: A higher score is awesome! It means your work is probably pretty original. But even with a high score, it's always good to make sure your writing is your best.
What should I do with the Uniqueness indicator?
There are a few things that can affect your Uniqueness percentage, even if you're not trying to copy anyone:
- Quoting sources: If you're using quotes from other sources, the Uniqueness indicator might not realize those are properly cited.
- Using common terms: Sometimes you just have to use certain words or phrases that everyone uses when writing about a topic. Your educator will know if this is the case when they are reviewing your assignment.
- Paraphrasing: Even when you reword things in your own way, it might accidentally look similar to the original source.
What to do when you see your percentage:
- Don't panic! The Uniqueness indicator is just one factor your educator considers when evaluating your work.
- Use it as a learning tool: A lower percentage can give you a chance to review your work and make sure you're citing sources correctly and expressing ideas in your own words.
- Check out the Uniqueness Report: This report shows you exactly which parts of your writing might be similar to other sources. It's a great way to check the text in your assignent that should be cited.
- Talk to your educator: If you have any questions or concerns about your percentage, don't hesitate to reach out to your educator. They want to help you succeed!
Making the most of the Uniqueness indicator:
- Aim for originality: Challenge yourself to develop your own ideas and express them in your own unique way.
- Cite your sources carefully: Always give credit where credit is due. Learn how to properly cite sources to avoid accidental plagiarism.
- Don't be afraid to revise: If your percentage is lower than you'd like, use the Uniqueness Report to identify areas for improvement and revise your work.
No Magic Number:
It's important to know that there's no specific Uniqueness percentage that guarantees a good grade. There are many factors that may influence your educator’s perception of the Uniqueness indicator.
Remember: The Uniqueness indicator is a tool to help you learn and grow as a writer. It's all about developing your own voice and expressing your ideas in your own unique way.
