Many of the essential features that Packback offers, such as real-time feedback, the Curiosity Score, and automated moderation, actually do NOT rely on Generative AI. Instead, these core functionalities are built on other forms of artificial intelligence or algorithmic processes that do not involve generative models.
What we use for feedback and grading assistance
We use Rule-Based Systems and Predictive Machine Learning. Think of these like everyday spam filters, recommended content or spell check.

These systems operate based on pre-defined rules that have been established by human designers or programmers. The rules are carefully crafted to address specific situations or conditions, allowing the system to evaluate inputs and make decisions accordingly. This process involves checking whether certain criteria are met by using straightforward 'if-then' logic.

This system is designed to examine and interpret text by identifying recurring patterns and structures within the material it processes. However, it is important to note that while it is capable of detailed analysis and recognition of various trends or themes in existing text, it does not possess the ability to generate, compose, or originate new content on its own.

Why does this matter?
Because this technology is lightweight, it does not require the massive data centers or energy consumption associated with Large Language Models (LLMs like ChatGPT). It also does not hallucinate or scrape the internet for copyrighted material to "train" itself.
Which Features DO Use Generative AI?
Some specific, interactive features on our platform (like the chat and some writing content-based feedback) do use Generative AI to provide more conversational coaching or content-aware insights.
