Peer Review: How Grades Are Calculated

A student's Peer Review grade comes down to one simple idea: it's the completion points they earn across all of their required reviews, added together. Here's how the grading works.

How review points add up to a grade

Every review is worth the number of points you set as Points per Review during assignment setup. Those points are split evenly across each task on the Review Task List, the short answer prompts you write for students to respond to. A student earns each task's share of the points based on how they respond to the prompt.

Once a student completes a review, their task points are added up to calculate that review's completion score, rounded to the nearest whole number when necessary. Completion scores accumulate as a student completes more reviews, and once they've completed all the required reviews, that total becomes their grade for the assignment.

Setting a character minimum

When you create or edit a Review Task List, you can turn on a character minimum to push students toward more substantial feedback. With it on, each task is scored on a sliding scale:

  • Answers of 150 characters or more (roughly two sentences) earn full credit for that task.
  • Shorter answers earn half credit.
  • Blank tasks earn no credit.

If you leave the character minimum off, students earn full credit for any answer to a task, regardless of length.

Grades are adjustable and stay hidden until you post them

Peer Review grades are calculated automatically and default to hidden, so they're not immediately released to students. That gives you room to review student activity, make any point adjustments, and post grades to your class (and sync them to your LMS) whenever you're ready.
