Troubleshooting Gradebook Sync in Packback

This article provides guidance for instructors experiencing issues with the Gradebook Sync feature in Packback, which allows student grades to automatically transfer to their Learning Management System (LMS).

Initial Gradebook Sync Setup Checklist

Before going through any additional troubleshooting, please ensure the following steps have been completed:

  • Gradebook Sync is enabled in your Packback community.
  • Your LMS integration with Packback has been successfully configured.

How to Re-Sync Grades

If you need to manually trigger a grade sync:

  1. Navigate to the Gradebook within your specific Packback community.
  2. Locate the assignment you wish to sync grades for and click the button labeled Sync Assignment.
  3. Wait for a confirmation message to appear, indicating that the sync process is complete.
  4. Check your LMS gradebook to confirm that the grades have been updated.

Grades Not Appearing in Your LMS

Possible Cause #1: Gradebook Sync might not be enabled, or there could be a temporary issue with your LMS.

Solutions:

  1. First, ensure that Gradebook Sync is enabled within your Packback Gradebook Sync settings.
  2. Check the status page for your LMS to see if there are any reported outages or maintenance periods.
  3. Attempt a manual re-sync of grades from Packback to your LMS by clicking on the “Sync Grades” button in the Packback gradebook.

Possible Cause #2: The grading column is disconnected from Packback.

This can happen if:

  • Old columns were brought over from a course copy
  • Columns were created within the LMS and are not connected to the community
  • The previously connected columns were deleted. Packback sends over new columns that are specifically tied to each assignment.

Solutions:

  1. Attempt a manual re-sync of grades from Packback to your LMS by clicking on the “Sync Grades” button in the Packback gradebook.
  2. Contact Support at help@packback.co, as the columns may need to be re-sent.

Duplicate Grade Columns in Your LMS

Possible Cause: This can happen if columns were manually created in the LMS rather than having Packback create them for you.

Solutions:

  1. Delete the duplicate grade columns directly within your LMS.
  2. Reach out to help@packback.co if you’d like the team to check on the rest of the column connections.

Students Reporting Their Grades Haven't Updated in the LMS

Possible Cause: Students may not have properly linked their Packback and LMS accounts. The column(s) may also be disconnected.

Solutions:

  1. Remind students to confirm that they have linked their Packback account with their LMS account by clicking on their Packback link in the course site.
  2. If all students seem to be affected, reach out to help@packback.co for support.

Only Some Student Grades Have Synced

Possible Cause #1: Students may not have properly linked their Packback and LMS accounts.

Solutions:

  1. Remind students to confirm that they have linked their Packback account with their LMS account by clicking on the Packback link within the course site.

Possible Cause #2: There might have been an interruption during the sync process, or there could be a temporary system delay.

  1. Try manually re-syncing the grades multiple times.
  2. Ensure you have a stable internet connection.
  3. Wait a short period and then attempt the re-sync again.

Receiving a Gradebook Sync Error Message

Possible Cause: This could indicate an API error or a temporary issue on Packback's end.

Solutions:

  1. Make note of the specific error message you are seeing.
  2. Check the Packback status page for any known issues or announcements.
  3. If the error persists, contact Packback Support at help@packback.co and provide them with the error message details.
