Assigning a Revision for a Writing Assignment

The revisions feature in Packback Writing Assignments lets you offer students the opportunity to revise their writing assignments. This feature allows students to address misunderstandings of prompts, incorporate feedback before final grades are assigned, and improve their writing quality.

While completing evaluations for Deep Dives and Originality Reviews, you will assign a grade to the student's work, provide feedback where necessary, and choose if you would like the student to revise and resubmit. When an evaluation with a revision request is released, it reopens the assignment to the student, enabling them to improve their work and submit a new submission for a new evaluation.

Step-by-Step Instructions for reopening a writing assignment for revision:

  1. Navigate to the relevant writing assignment within your Packback community.
  2. Access the Submissions table.
  3. Reopen an assignment for revision by initiating a new evaluation, modifying an existing evaluation, or returning to a draft.
    • New Evaluation: Click the “Grade” button in the Grading Status column to begin a new evaluation
    • Existing Evaluation: Go to the submission and click “Edit Evaluation” or access “Edit Evaluation” from the Actions dropdown in order to update a published evaluation.
    • Draft: Click “In Progress” in the Grading Status column to resume an evaluation in draft
  4. If you haven’t already, make sure you complete the evaluation, provide a preliminary grade, and offer constructive feedback to guide student improvement.
  5. Select the designated option to Allow student to revise their work.
  6. Instructors have the option to establish a new due date specific to the individual student for the revised submission.
  7. From there make sure to Release evaluation to the student once it has been completed. The student will then be notified that their initial feedback and the ability to resubmit a writing assignment is available to them!

How is a student notified?

Upon the release of an evaluation that includes the revision option, students receive an in-platform notification and an email. The assignment will reappear in the student's open assignments list until the revised due date has passed. Students are then able to revise their work based on the provided feedback and submit a revised version of their work.

Evaluation of Revised Submissions:

Instructors will evaluate the revised submission. The grade assigned to the revised submission will serve as the student's new grade for the assignment and, if previously synchronized, will update in the institution's learning management system.

Can I reopen an assignment for revision multiple times?

If the revised submission still requires further improvement, instructors may reopen the assignment for revision again. Simply evaluate the new submission, adding a grade with feedback, and check the box next to "Allow student to revise their work", just as you did the first time. This process facilitates a continued formative feedback loop.
