Managing Submissions, Revisions, and Grading in Packback Writing Assignments

Balancing student submissions, revisions, and grading tasks can feel overwhelming—but Packback’s submission table is here to help. This guide walks you through how to access and use the submission table effectively so you can stay organized and focused.

Accessing the Submission Table

To view student submissions:

  1. Go to the Writing Assignments section in your course.
  2. Select the specific assignment you want to review.
  3. Click the Submissions tab to view the class-wide submission table.

Understanding the Submission Table

The class submission table provides key information about every student’s progress and grading status.

Progress Column

Located on the left side, this shows where each student is in the assignment process:

  • Not Started – The student has not begun writing.
  • Draft Started – The student has started, but not submitted.
  • Submitted – The student has submitted their work.

If revisions have been assigned, you’ll also see which attempt the student is on (e.g., “Revision 2”). If the student is on their first submission, no attempt name will be listed.

Submission Details

When a submission exists for the latest attempt the following columns will give you key information before you start grading:

  • Submitted At – Timestamp of the submission.
  • Uniqueness – This indicator represents the percentage of a student's work that is not matched to other sources. A higher percentage generally means more of the work is unique.
  • AI Risk – This indicator analyzes the student's writing style, looking for patterns that are characteristic of AI-generated text.

Grading and Evaluation

The Grading Status column alerts you to tasks requiring your attention:

  • Pending Submission – Student has not submitted any work for this assignment.
  • Grade (blue button) – A submission is ready for evaluation. Click to start.
  • In Progress – You began an evaluation but haven’t published it. Click to resume.
  • Not Yet Released – Evaluation is published but hidden from the student. Click to edit the evaluation and change the status to “Release”, or use Post Grades to release all hidden grades at once.
  • Finalized – Evaluation is submitted with no revision requested. No further action needed. If you wish to make changes, you can still edit the evaluation by accessing the Actions dropdown at the end of the row. “Edit Evaluation” allows you to change grades, add/delete comments, and request a revision.
  • Pending Revision – This student’s most recent evaluation has a revision request. When the student submits their revision, you will be prompted to grade.

Please Note: You can edit any evaluation at any time—even after it's finalized. You can make any changes to the feedback, grades, and even add a revision, but you cannot undo a revision or delete an evaluation that allows for a revision.

Viewing and Managing Individual Submissions

To review all of a student’s submissions:

  1. Click the Actions dropdown next to their name, or click the attempt name (e.g., “Revision 1”) in the Progress column.
  2. You’ll be taken to a student-specific submission table where you can view:
    • All previous submissions
    • Past evaluations (with the option to edit)

To return to the main class table, click All Submissions or Back to All Students.

LMS Sync and Grade Visibility

On the right side of the submission table, you can view:

  • Current Grade – Based on the latest released evaluation.
  • Visibility – Whether the evaluation is hidden or released to the student.
  • LMS Sync – Confirms whether the grade has been synced to your LMS gradebook.

Grades automatically update each time a new evaluation is submitted and released to the student. For example, when you release an evaluation on a revision, that new evaluation will determine the current grade.
