Overview
Engagement Insights for Deep Dives was built to help educators see how students write, not just what they submit.
In the era of AI, the challenge isn’t only plagiarism — it’s cognitive offloading: when students skip the productive struggle that builds critical thinking and writing skill. Engagement Insights brings the focus back to the process with a more robust planning experience, a Writing Process Report, and student commenting functionality.
The Pedagogical Foundation
Engagement Insights for Deep Dives is grounded in Zimmerman’s model of Self-Regulated Learning (SRL), which frames effective learning as an active, cyclical process:
| SRL Phase | Writing Phase | Focus |
| Forethought | Planning | Goal-setting, preparation |
| Performance | Draft & Revising | Applying and monitoring strategies |
| Self-Reflection | Reflecting | Evaluating and adapting |
By making each phase visible, the report supports metacognition — helping students learn to plan, monitor, and reflect on their own thinking.
Why This Matters
- Prevents cognitive offloading. When students know their process counts, they are more likely to engage in meaningful planning, revision, and reflection.
- Rebuilds trust. Instructors gain context that supports professional judgment rather than relying solely on detection scores.
- Develops lifelong learning skills. Students build awareness of their strategies and growth as writers.
What’s Next
