Completing a Follow Up Assignment in Deep Dives

What is a Follow-Up Assignment in Deep Dives?

A Follow-Up Assignment is a type of Deep Dive assignment where your past work from another assignment carries over, so you can keep building on what you’ve already written. Instead of starting from scratch, your previous submission becomes the starting point for the new assignment.

How do Follow-Up Assignments Work?

When you start a follow-up assignment:

  • When you click “Start My Deep Dive” in a follow-up assignment, a pop-up message will appear letting you know that your work from the earlier assignment is about to be copied over.
    • If you have submitted to the previous assignment, select “I’m Ready!” on the pop-up to copy your past work over
    • If you have not yet submitted work to the previous assignment, you can click “I’m Ready!” to start the assignment with a blank document -OR- you can select “Cancel” if you would like more time to complete the prior assignment before starting the follow-up assignment.
  • As you begin, your writing, sources, and notes from the past assignment will appear in the new draft.
  • You can keep improving, revising, or expanding your work as you respond to the new prompt and requirements.

How do I Know Which Assignments are Follow-Ups?

In addition to the pop-up you see when you go to start your follow-up assignment, you will see information regarding the follow-up status and the previous assignment on the main assignment page and wherever the assignment appears on the Community Homepage.

What’s Different from Revisions?

It can be easy to confuse follow-ups with revisions, but here’s the difference:

  • Follow-Up Assignments are new assignments for the whole class. Everyone has the chance to carry their past work into the new draft.
  • Revisions are for individual students. Your instructor may ask you to revise and resubmit the same assignment, and the new grade will replace your old one.

Tips for Success

  • Use the feedback from your previous assignment (found in “Your Resource” view while drafting) to guide your new draft.
  • Double-check the new prompt and rubric—your instructor may have changed them for the follow-up.
  • Treat the follow-up like a fresh opportunity: it’s a new assignment with its own deadline and grade.
