What is the Writing Process Report?
The Writing Process Report gives you a window into how you composed your discussion post — how much time you spent writing, how you revised your work, and whether you engaged with Packback Feedback along the way. The Writing Process Report helps make that effort visible to you and your instructor.
| PLEASE NOTE: Discussion posts are shorter and more conversational than full writing assignments, so you may see fewer phases in your report than you would on a Deep Dive. That is completely normal — the report is a reflection of how you spend your time writing, not a judgment of the quality of your writing. |
Where to Find It
The Writing Process Report is available directly on any discussion post. Here's how to access it:
- Open the Discussion Assignment and find your post.
- Click Options which can be found near the bottom of the post.
- Select View Insights. This will open a panel where you will be able to see both your Originality Report and your Writing Process Report.
Both students and instructors can access the Writing Process Report through the Options menu. The report is only visible to the student who wrote the post and the instructor.
How to Read Your Writing Process Report
The Writing Process Report organizes your writing activity into phases:
Planning |
How you prepared before writing |
Drafting |
How you composed your text |
Revising |
How you improved your work |
Reflecting |
How you looked back on your work |
Because discussion posts are typically shorter and more focused than writing assignments, it is normal — and expected — that you will mostly see Drafting and Revising phases. Seeing little or no Planning or Reflecting activity is not a problem.
The report also shows total time spent and whether you interacted with Packback Feedback, giving your instructor insights into the effort you put into your post.
A Few Things to Note Right Now
- The Writing Process Report is available on all discussion posts through Options → View Insights.
- The comment box — which lets you add context about your writing process directly on your post — is not yet available in Discussions. This is coming in a future update.
- The report works alongside the Originality Report, which is also accessible from View Insights.
What's Coming: Full Engagement Insights for Discussion Assignments
The Writing Process Report is the first step. This fall, Packback will release a full Engagement Insights experience for Discussions — giving a richer view of participation across three dimensions:
Contribution (Available Now)
The Writing Process Report — see how you drafted, revised, and engaged with feedback on your post.
Curiosity (Coming Fall 2026)
Reading and exploration — see how you engaged with peer posts, the feed, and instructor feedback.
Connection (Coming Fall 2026)
Peer interaction — see how you engaged with, reacted to, and replied to your classmates.
The full Discussions Engagement Report will surface how you read and explored the discussion feed, how you connected with peers, and the diversity of your interactions across your learning community — not just what you posted.
Privacy
Your Writing Process Report is private between you and your instructor. Packback never sells or shares your data with third parties.
